TSITSIPAS CONQUERS MONTE CARLO FOR A THIRD TIME: RUUD SWEPT ASIDE IN THE FINAL

Stefanos Tsitsipas reclaimed his place among the clay-court elite on Sunday, April 14, 2024, defeating Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4 to win the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters for the third time in four years.

The Greek was in control from the opening games, racing through the first set and holding firm in the second as Ruud tried to find a way back. The victory gave Tsitsipas the 11th ATP singles title of his career and made him only the fifth man in the Open Era to win Monte Carlo three times.

His path to the trophy was far from easy. In the semifinals Tsitsipas came through against Jannik Sinner, the in-form Australian Open champion, while Ruud had produced the shock of the week by beating top seed Novak Djokovic in the other semifinal.

Djokovic still left the Principality with a record of his own: his quarterfinal win over Alex de Minaur took him to a 77th career ATP Masters 1000 semifinal, moving him clear of Rafael Nadal at the top of that list. Defending champion Andrey Rublev, by contrast, fell early, losing in the second round to Alexei Popyrin.

For Tsitsipas, the title was a welcome boost after an uneven start to the season, and a reminder that the clay of Monte Carlo continues to bring out his best tennis.
